Engage with others

"If God were to give me a piece of life, I would dress simply, throw myself face first into the sun, baring not only my body but also my soul. My god, if I had a heart, I would write my hate on ice, and wait for the sun to show. Over the stars I would paint with a Van Gogh dream a Benedetti poem, and a Serrat song would be the serenade I'd offer to the moon. With my tears I would water roses, to feel the pain of their thorns, and the red kiss of their petals..."
Gabriel Garcia Marquez (upon retiring from public life due to cancer)

Sometimes we can think of "pioneers" as lone soldiers, going against the odds and against the mainstream, seeking to change the world on their own. But our daily interaction in this community shows us that we are not alone as pioneers. Not only can we not but we should not change the world all by ourselves as individuals.

Connect with something bigger than yourself. Search for those who are working on similar or related things, share ideas with them, ask them for help and work with them where useful. Be willing to offer them help when they need it as well.

Engaging with others is about engaging with those who share your visions, but also about engaging with those who think differently from you and are doing something that may seem completely different and unrelated. Engage across diversity, for that is how we learn. That is how we will create and make new discoveries. If you cannot engage directly with those who conflict with you, then seek to understand and to learn from your differences and work based on that learning.

Engaging with others is about recognising interdependence. And about practicing humility.
