by Ken Wilber

book jacket

How can I summarise in brief what this book manages to do?

Ken Wilber in this book provides us with a map or a language, that helped me distinguish the different streams of thought of our time. Here is finally someone that has a good definition of what the new paradigm is actually about, so good that it suddenly became clear to distinguish those who in fact are on a new path, from those who claim to be, but who are repeating the mistakes of the past.

He respects where we have come from, and shows clearly that the only way to move forward is to embrace and transcend modernity - which has brought us tremendous growth and development - instead of condemning our past and only seeing the problems it has brought with it. This resonated particularly with me, as I have had a tendency to condemn the past. He made me realise that it is only as we accept and work with what we have, that we can move forward and overcome the limitations of past and present.

His book to me was like a telescope that helped clarify the challenges and the opportunities of our time, distinguishing the noise from the essential stuff. Brilliant, is all I can say.

Wilber's book is very ambitious. It presents a history of consciousness and his ideas on where we are headed. For someone without even a passing knowledge of psychology, this was a challenging but very eye opening read. It took a while but then a lot of what he said snapped into a coherent whole. My fave parts were his critiques of the Englightenment. From a historical background he draws some very interesting conclusions on why we see the problems we do when we look around us today. I liked the fact that his critque was often coupled with proposed solutions. Very rare. Read it!
