Centre for Human Ecology
Who we are
Centre for Human Ecology is an independent organisation
carrying out action, research and education for personal
development, ecological sustainability and social justice.
Humanity now stands on the cusp of significant environmental
changes and is in throes of social, political and economic
developments that offer both immense opportunities and serious
challenges. "Sticking plaster" solutions that just fix symptoms are not
enough.
Our aim is to help create responses that address underlying causes, that
are based on respect, that empower people, that restore nature, that
reflect the importance of people's identity, belonging and purpose.
We carry out action, research and education with individuals,
communities and organisations wishing to take responsibility and
initiative for effective, enduring change for sustainability and justice.
CHE is rooted in Scotland while also being international. Our work
is focused in the country that is our home; our achievements have far
wider impact: directly and as we share experiences and insights with
people and organisations across the world.
What is Human Ecology?
Human Ecology is about uncovering and understanding the connections
between personal action, social systems and the ecology of the planet of
which we are part. The challenge is to critically examine the way things are
and to ask why and how they could be different; to find new and better ways
of arranging our lives, our businesses and our societies, ways that reduce
poverty and inequality, reduce the amount of resources we use, restore the
environment and improve quality of life for all now and for generations to
come.
The CHE approach
Everyone's attitudes and behaviours help shape the world around us;
at CHE we try to be part of the change we seek by acting as we would
have others act.
We believe in the importance of the whole person:
- Head: knowledge and critical thinking;
- Heart: insight and compassion;
- Hand: skills for effective action.
We emphasise the importance of linking action at three different levels:
- Personal: developing head, heart and hand in all that we do;
- Local: developing theory and practice by engaging with others in real issues rooted in the places we live and work;
- Wider society: not only bringing global perspectives to our work but also influencing change in the wider society.
We aim to contribute actively and effectively to a more sustainable and just world through integrating:
- Action: which delivers practical results, including capacity building, consultancy and campaigning;
- Research: to discover, develop, evaluate and communicate new understanding and approaches;
- Education: to spread our influence by inspiring and supporting people through courses and training that meets the real needs of individuals and organisations.
